The Fordham swimming and diving team kicked off this weekend with their third straight meet on the road, with up and down results for the two squads. The women’s team stayed perfect, 4–0, handing the Hoyas their second straight loss with a 159–141 victory. The men’s team couldn’t kick its three-game skid, falling to Georgetown 219–79, putting them at 1–3 on the year.

Sophomore Spencer Clarke from Aptos, California remained hopeful ahead of their toughest trial of the season.

“Going into Georgetown, we definitely know that they’re going to be a challenge and they’ll be coming at full force. I think we’re going to take the momentum that we had at Marist and BU and hopefully improve on what we can fix.” When asked specifically what the team needed to improve on, Clarke responded with confidence in his squad. “As a team, our energy is there, our camaraderie is there.”

The women’s team edged out Georgetown in their first program faceoff. While it was their closest matchup of the season, the women claimed 10 of the 16 events behind stellar performances from seniors Paulina Watson and Michelle Martin, the junior from Monterey Park, California. Watson touched first in the 100 (58.72) and 200 (2:05.60) backstroke events, while Martin had the top time in the 50 freestyle (23.86, a season-best) and the 100 butterfly (56.43).

Martin continued to stuff the stat sheet on Saturday, playing a key role in both relay wins. In the 200 medley relay, Martin, freshman Alison Lin, sophomore Kiara Norris and senior Theresa Mullen took first in 1:48.19. The 400 freestyle relay team of Martin, junior Caitlin McNary, freshman Clare Culver and Mullen finished on top in 3:31.19.

The men dropped their third straight meet in D.C., with junior Patrick Wilson being the lone event winner for the Rams. He finished ahead of the pack in the 200 breaststroke, with a season-best time of 2:07.02. He also added another season-best time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing second in 57.63 seconds.

Wilson also propelled both relays to second place finishes. In the 200 medley relay, Spencer Clarke, Wilson, senior Casey Sawyer and junior Bryce Bollesen posted a time of 1:35.57. The 400 freestyle relay, consisting of sophomore Josh Stegen, senior Kevin Berry, Wilson and Bollesen, clocked in at 3:12.80.

Stegen had a strong outing individually as well, touching second in the 200 freestyle in 1:43.17 in addition to a third place finish in the 100 freestyle (48.63). Senior Christopher Sleutjes also posted a second place finish in the 1000 freestyle (9:57.13).

The men’s team will look to regain its footing in their next two meets ahead of the annual Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.

Looking ahead, Fordham travels north as they visit the Fairfield Stags for their fourth consecutive road meet on Wednesday November 13th at 5:00 p.m. The women will look to stay perfect not only on the season, but in program history against Fairfield, with nine straight victories since their first matchup.
