On March 8, many people around the world took the opportunity to celebrate the women in their lives and show them how much they mean to them. However, International Women’s Day is not just about celebrating the women in your life but also about recognizing how far women have come as a whole and the progress that we have yet to make in the world. Most importantly, International Women’s Day is about celebrating and feeling proud of yourself as a woman and celebrating all you have accomplished.
Coming from a family of mostly women, International Women’s Day is really important for my family. On this day, I normally let the women in my life know how special they are and wish them a great day. Along with this, my family usually likes to spend time eating together and watching a movie at home. Lastly, my father brings my mom, sisters and me flowers as a small token of appreciation to let us know that he cares about and appreciates us.
The most important part of International Women’s Day is not about the celebrations, but about recognizing the women in my life who have made an impact on me. My mother immigrated to the United States, leaving everything behind to give her family a better life and access to more opportunities than she had herself, all while managing to become the first in her family to go to college. My grandmother, a smart and determined woman, who always spoiled my sisters and me, and who raised my mother to be the woman she is today, emphasized the importance of education and hard work despite only having completed elementary school. My younger sisters, who have always been there for me and who I know I will always be able to count on regardless. Recognizing all of these women is the best part of International Women’s Day because I am reminded that I am not alone and am encouraged to learn from the women in my life to improve myself.
Though Women’s Day is a day to celebrate, it is also a day to remind yourself that there is still much to be improved in society and that the fight is not yet over. Women still struggle to receive the same opportunities as men, be taken seriously in their careers without being questioned or doubted and remind society that we are more than just what’s on the outside and will not stand for being objectified. It is important to recognize these issues and come to terms with the reality that although we have come far, we still have a long journey ahead of us. As women, it is also important that we come together and fight for the opportunities and respect we deserve.
International Women’s Day is a day of celebration and recognition for women all around the world. In a world where women still struggle and face challenges, it is a day to recognize and appreciate all the women who struggle with you and give you strength, and the women who have struggled and fought for the world we live in today. However, it is also a day on which women are reminded that there is still much work to be done to build a better future for the women of tomorrow, so the world can become a place where women are given the same opportunities as men without being questioned, or are even able to do something as simple as taking a walk at night without having to worry about if they will make it home.
