On Oct. 28, Dove Cameron released her new single “Bad Idea,” quickly gaining lots of attention. Cameron has been in the music industry for quite some time. Starting on Disney Channel, she has worked to be a solo artist and created a new style and image. Cameron has released other singles as well, such as “Boyfriend” and “Breakfast,” both of which received great feedback. 

For pop music, I would say Cameron’s tone in “Bad Idea” is calm and dark. It definitely fits the same vibe as her other recent songs, so if you are a fan of those I would certainly give “Bad Idea” a listen. To me, she resembles Billie Eilish’s sound with a softer, lower voice. If you like Billie Eilish, Lana Del Ray or even Taylor Swift’s album, “Reputation,” Cameron’s music would be a good fit for you. It is definitely not the upbeat pop music from her Disney Channel days, and I personally like the switch. Though, if you were looking for more cheery-toned music, you would be disappointed. The chorus of the song does pick up, however, with more of a fast-paced and catchy rhythm. Personally, I’m not a fan of “darker” pop music, but this element gives it a unique twist that I enjoy. If you are someone who is on the fence about dark pop music, this song can sway your opinion. 

Another interesting aspect of this song is the speaking that Cameron does in the verses and the pre-chorus. She speaks with a low and deep voice that definitely adds to the song’s overall vibe and makes you focus on the lyrics before the chorus. This style of singing shows off her talent and all of the layers she has in her voice. This song demonstrates the different styles that Cameron can sing. 

The lyrics of the song are smooth and well-written, adding a  poetic dimension. If relationship songs like Swift’s pique your interest, you will like the lyrics to this one. Cameron describes a relationship that is, as titled, a bad idea but she pursues it anyway. It is a little bit different than the meaning behind her other songs which gives this one its own edge. I think it allows for this song to flow with her other music without sounding too repetitive. 

Overall, “Bad Idea” is a great addition to Cameron’s discography. Given her genius music video for “Breakfast,” I would love to see what she comes up with for this one. Already it seems that this song is gaining as much attention and I can see why. Cameron’s style is trendy, but this song’s rhythm does make it stand out from others. I think it adds a nice break from her other music without being too off-brand. Cameron does not have nearly as many songs as other popular pop artists out there, but her songs are giving her a new image that has lots of potential.
