After twerking on stage with Robin Thicke at the VMAs in 2013 and creating albums Bangerz and Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, Miley Cyrus’s new album Younger Now shows immense growth and a return back to her roots for the former unpredictable pop singer.
Not only is Miley starting to spell words without excessive use of the letter Z, but she creates a pleasantly different album from the random blend of sounds the world has come to expect from her. Younger Now is a blend of pop, country and even rock that creates a catchy and nostalgic sound. The album contains 11 songs, none of which are explicit, as well as a single featuring godmother Dolly Parton, further conveying a grab for her old school country roots.
The first song on the album is the title track itself “Younger Now,” and on par with fans expectations for the album, it is all about change that sets the tone for the rest of the songs. “Younger Now” is a mix of Miley’s feelings, letting her fans know that although she is changing, she is not scared or regretful of the person she used to be.
With this thought, Miley is spreading a positive message, letting people know that while change is good, it is also important to embrace who you were in all the stages of your life by making this the first song on the album, Miley makes sure listeners understand right away what to expect from the rest of the tracks.
Not only is Younger Now about embracing a new Miley, but it is also about her fiancé Liam Hemsworth. Many know that Liam and Miley have had a rocky relationship and even split up for a while. However, a number of songs on this album seem to be a testament to him and their relationship, such as “I Would Die for You.” This song specifically showcases the dark and trivial times in Miley’s life, but depicts her relationship as almost a saving grace within all of the chaos. Although a sad and slow melody, the song is sweet and appreciative of the one person she would do anything for.
Other notable songs off the album are “Rainbowland” with those heart-warming vocals from Dolly Parton and the hit-song “Malibu,” which was released in the summer and has accumulated more than 200,000 streams on Spotify.
After listening to the album, I urge everyone to check it out. Those who love a new mix of music styles and funky off the radio songs in general will greatly appreciate Younger Now and all the quirks it has to offer. For others who enjoy popular radio pop hits, this album may not be for you, but it is definitely worth a listen just to see who Miley Cyrus has declared herself to be now.
