With the election results and exams in full swing, it is more important than ever to make self-care a priority. There is a lot happening around us, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by it all. But taking the time to check in with yourself and find ways to manage stress is key to staying grounded.
Self-care has played a key role in my success, and I have found a few simple activities that support different aspects of my well-being. It doesn’t have to be extravagant — sometimes, the best self-care is something small that meets your needs in the moment. The important thing is finding what works for you.
For those who are more creatively inclined, I have found scrapbooking to be a wonderful way to reconnect with old memories while creating a visual to look back on. It is a blend of nostalgia and creativity, offering a personal way to reflect on the memories made.
For example, I recently studied abroad in Granada, Spain, and found scrapbooking a great way to reflect on my time there. It allowed me to relive my experiences while creatively organizing all the mementos I collected. Now, back at Fordham University for my senior year, I continue the tradition of collecting items and printing photos to capture and cherish my final fall in the Bronx. It is a meaningful way to preserve these moments as I near the end of this chapter.
Another great creative outlet is writing, whether it is contributing to The Fordham Ram or keeping a personal journal. Journaling, in particular, is a powerful way to process your emotions and reflect on your day. I love using my journal, “No Particular Order,” from creator Margot Lee, or a variation of the five-minute journal, which you can find at various online retailers.
Physical exercise also plays a vital role in self-care. Whether it’s yoga, stretching, running or whatever feels right for you, moving your body can be relaxing and helps to release endorphins. Personally, I love taking walks through the New York Botanical Gardens or Central Park. They are the perfect spots to enjoy the beauty of the fall foliage while immersing myself in whatever new music I am currently obsessed with.
Another simple yet powerful form of self-care is spending time with a friend or reconnecting with someone. It allows you to share experiences and feel supported, all of which can lift your mood and reduce stress. Even if it is just enjoying each other’s company, being around someone whom you have a connection with is important for everyday life.
Cooking, too, is a wonderful way to practice self-care, as it nourishes both the body and the soul. It allows you to get creative in the kitchen while preparing exciting meals. Some of my favorite dishes to cook for a self-care meal include grilled cheese and tomato soup, chili and, of course, desserts. I recently made pumpkin cake, a great fall-inspired treat to share with friends. There are endless culinary possibilities, so take time to create a favorite meal of yours.
As a lover of skincare products, I find that using face and eye masks is another fun and nourishing way to practice self-care. You can make these products yourself using ingredients like aloe vera and honey, like in this recipe, “How to Make an Aloe Vera Face Mask.” Some of my favorite products to buy include Laneige’s masks, such as the Water Sleeping Mask or the Beauty of Joseon Honey Glow Mask.
Lastly, the best thing you can do for yourself is get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Prioritizing rest boosts your energy and enhances your overall health and happiness. This is the easiest way to set yourself up for a better day.
There are countless ways to practice self-care; what works best for you depends on your preferences. The key is not what you do, but simply making the time to relax, unwind and prioritize your well-being. College can be an exciting and demanding time, but it is important to remember that your mental and emotional health should always come first.
