About

Interested in covering events on campus, exploring New York City museums or restaurants to write reviews, voicing your opinions or covering Fordham’s sports teams?

You’ve found the place to do all that and more — plus a great community of people to join. Any Fordham undergraduate student is welcome to get involved with the Ram. In addition to developing skills and producing content you are passionate about, alumni often leave saying working here was the best part of their college experience because of the friends they were able to make and how rewarding they found the experience.

The Fordham Ram was founded in 1918 and serves as the Rose Hill campus’ journal of record. Over the Ram’s 104-year existence, our journalists have covered everything from the first co-ed graduating class to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and continue to cover campus news despite the difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ram went online in 2012 and continues to publish both online and in print. Our print issues come out every Wednesday in addition to publishing online. Full-time staff members attend weekly budget meetings and production nights in addition to writing articles as needed.

Besides full-time staff, students can also get involved at the Ram by being contributors! Prior journalism experience is not required. Getting involved as a contributing or staff writer is a small time commitment and you can start whenever you’d like by emailing a section editor(s).

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join the Ram?

Anyone who attends Fordham University as an undergraduate can get involved with the Ram! In order for your application to be considered, you must have written a minimum of three articles for any section of the Ram. The Ram looks for a range of experiences, skills and perspectives, and no prior journalism experience is needed.

What is the Ram looking for in student contributors?

The Ram is looking for new writers for all four of our major sections, students interested in the digital and business teams, copy editors and photographers. We are also interested in students who want to write weekly or biweekly columns on student research and business to be highlighted in the News section.

To be a contributor or learn more about getting involved, you can email the editor(s) of the section(s) you are interested in contributing. They will add you to the section’s email list. If you are interested in copy editing, email our production editor and you will be added to the group chat. If you are interested in becoming a photographer or joining the business team, contact our multimedia director and business director respectively.

How do I become a Staff Writer?

A contributing writer is eligible to become a staff writer after they have written at least five articles for the Ram. In order to be promoted to staff writer, qualified contributors should contact the lead section editor of the section they have written for most and express their interest in the position. In order to retain the position title, each staff writer must write at least two articles per month. Staff writers may also be invited to regular meetings with their sections. The position also allows staff writers to build professional relationships with their section editors and meet other writers at the Ram.

How do I become a Section Editor?

The Ram operates on a calendar year schedule, with each new volume and staff beginning in January. In preparation for the next volume, The Fordham Ram e-board invites interested students to apply for section editor and other official staff positions by submitting online applications in the fall semester. Applications typically open in early October and close by the end of the month or shortly after. Qualified applicants will be asked to interview with current e-board members who are then responsible for hiring the next volume’s staff. The next volume’s staff should be informed of their acceptance by the end of November before the next volume begins.

On occasion, section editor positions become available in the summer between semesters. If such a position becomes available, students who have previously written for the Ram or who are a part of one of the Ram’s email lists will be sent information about how to apply for those open spots. Open spots may also be posted on the Ram’s Instagram page.

Can I still join the Ram if I don’t have any journalism experience or am not a journalism major?

Yes! The Ram will teach you everything you need to know to get started. We welcome and encourage students from all backgrounds and fields to get involved. The Ram’s staff boasts a plethora of majors varying from English and communications to biology and medieval studies.

But it’s not just all work, and many alumni have left saying working at the Ram was the highlight of their college experience because of the friends they made and how rewarding being a part of The Ram was. Hear what some of our alumni have to say about their favorite memories at the Ram:

Nora Leach, FCRH ’24, served as an executive copy editor. Leach notes her favorite memory was listening to the Hamilton soundtrack at the copy table. “During one of our Monday copy nights, we decided to listen to the ‘Hamilton’ soundtrack. While I was a big fan of the musical in high school, I didn’t think I’d remember all of the words. Two hours later, Michael, Sophia, Hannah and I could sing almost all of the lyrics — much to Cailee’s dismay — before we had to stop ourselves. I barely edited any articles that night, but I think that’s just proof of how The Fordham Ram is more than just a newspaper, as cheesy as that sounds. I’ll always be grateful to the Ram for the friends I’ve made here and for reactivating my ‘Hamilton’ phase.”

Nicole Braun, FCRH ’24, served as Opinion Editor for Volume 105. Braun recalled fond memories during production nights at the Ram. “I loved the whole routine of being an editor, especially Production Nights: chatting with my co-editors and discussing that week’s articles, spending more time than might have been necessary brainstorming a single headline, the way the room lit up once pizza arrived. But my favorite part of the night was when we would all turn toward the copy table for our weekly philosophical debates. Waxing poetic and laughing uncontrollably in the Ram office at 1 a.m. are memories I will always cherish.”
