The Fordham Rose Hill United Student Government (USG) met on Thursday, Dec. 7, to discuss new club proposals and new business.
The Middle Eastern Student Association was presented with their award for the Club of the Month. Vice President of Fordham College at Rose Hill Emma Balint, FCRH ’24, and Vice President of Sustainability Sean Power, FCRH ’24, were presented with the Vice President of the Semester awards.
Senator Nicky D’Abundo, FCRH ’26, Senator Ananya Grover, GSB ’26, and Senator Laila Sayegh, FCRH ’27, presented their Office of Disability Services (ODS) proposal. They explained that the goal of this proposal is to increase communication and outreach between ODS, administration and students. The proposals ask that acceptance letters include information about ODS services for prospective students and include information about how to set up a consultation meeting with ODS. They explained that this acceptance letter enhancement would create a more welcoming environment for students who need accommodations. This proposal asks ODS to make their services more visible to students. This proposal was approved.
The In the Margins club, Opera club and the Billiards club all presented their club proposals to the Senate. The In the Margins club founders explained that Fordham does not have a book club, so they decided to create one that is tailored to commuter students’ schedules and BIPOC students — or students who are “in the margins.” They explained that this club prioritizes commuter students’ involvement. They said many clubs meet at times that commuter students cannot join, and many commuter students read during their long commutes, making a book club would be perfect. Their general meetings would consist of hour-long book discussions and they would meet every two weeks. Possible events they would host are DIY bookmark-making events, library trips, book drives and hot chocolate hours and read-alongs. This club proposal was approved.
The Billiards club founders stated that they would like to teach students how to play pool and teach the theory of pool. They also explained they have many connections with professional billiards players who could come and teach the students how to play. They plan on going to pool halls as club excursions. This club was approved by the Senate.
Alex Carmona, FCRH ’26, presented her proposal for the Fordham Opera club. She explained that she wants to create a musical community on campus and provide classical music and opera performance opportunities for students. She plans to have guest speakers, go to opera performances with her club members, host a small opera recital and attend MET viewings of old opera performances. This club was approved.
Executive President Briana Al-Omoush, FCRH ’24, presented Stony Brook University’s student government’s requests for the New York state Legislature to include college students in the new student suicide prevention act.
Senator Megan Ruzicka, FCRH ’27, presented the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) website, where students can register for the AFSP walk on April 6, 2024. Ruzicka said she encourages the USG Senate to have their committees make a walk team or if the class Senates could create a walk team together.
Vice President of Communications Ariadna Wong, FCRH ’25, presented a budget request for mini-microphones for filming videos for the USG Instagram and TikTok accounts. This request was approved.
