The Fordham Rose Hill United Student Government (USG) met on Thursday, March 7, to learn about changes in the Career Center and new proposals.
Executive President Eron Maltzman, GSB ’25, gave the executive report where he explained that the proposed change to the USG bylaws regarding the executive ticket was removed, and that he and Vice President of Fordham College at Rose Hill (FCRH) Emma Blake, FCRH ’25, have no updates about the possible Study Abroad committee due to lack of communication from the Study Abroad Office.
Cheretta Robson, senior associate director of the Career Center, and Annette McLaughlin, director of the Office of Career Services, presented on student resources available at the Career Center and their mission.
They explained that their mission is to help students figure out where they are going to go and how they are going to get there. With Fordham University’s new campaign of cura personalis, they try to incorporate that into the Career Center by focusing on the development of the whole person in the workforce.
They said that the Career Center has many resources for students such as Handshake, RamConnect, live programming and on-demand video tutorials for students, collaboration opportunities with Fordham faculty, staff and alumni and interview preparation and resume writing help through their Fordham Career Center Youtube account.
Blake asked about student success rates for finding internships through Handshake. Robson and McLaughlin said that they have a section on Handshake called “Collections.” They say this section is aimed at serving those — like international or first-year students — who have more specific requirements for potential internships or jobs.
They are currently looking into a new tracking system where they can better see what internships and jobs students land. They say this information will help the Career Center build better relationships with employers.
Robson and McLaughlin said that all of the information that they currently have regarding student internships and jobs is self-reported by students into Handshake.
They previously had 412 career events last year, promoted 1,416 external events, held 10 career fairs and had over 4,000 individual counseling hours. They say the Career Center is also hopes to be integrated more into both Gabelli School of Business (GSB) and FCRH academics.
The USG announced the Mimes and Mummers as the February Club of the Month.
Blake presented a budget request for her FCRH Dean’s Council Student Wellness and STEM subcommittees.
Vice President of Facilities and Dining Mike Rodriguez, FCRH ’27, presented his improvement acknowledgment paper. Rodriguez proposed that the USG Instagram publish this letter indicating the recent accomplishments of the Facilities and Dining Committee, such as fresh berries being included in the McShane Marketplace menu rotation, the improvement of the scoop-ability of the ice cream and the reintroduction of toppings to the ice cream station. He explained that he felt that it is important to share these small accomplishments so that students know that their concerns are being heard. Maltzman said that committee accomplishments are not normally something that they have posted in the past, however, if that is a change the whole of USG wants to make, they can discuss that.
Vice President of Operations Megan Ruzicka, GSB ’27, and Senator Tina Pathak, FCRH ’28, presented their Pre-Law Database Proposal. They explained that this database was discussed last semester but that they have changed it a bit to be more integrated with academics, and are collaborating with the FCRH Dean’s Council and their Student Success Subcommittee. The Student Success Subcommittee will work on the database with a representative from the Operations Committee at their meetings.
