Pieces like this completely ignore the biological realities of childbirth and child raising. Giving birth is an extremely difficult process for a woman and physical recovery takes weeks. Women are also the ones who breastfeed their children– but besides all that, significant changes happen in a mother’s brain in the weeks and months after giving birth: http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/01/what-happens-to-a-womans-brain-when-she-becomes-a-mother/384179/
It’s not mere coincidence or “societal pressure” that causes the usual patterns of parental behavior, it’s an innate part of our instinctual behavior as humans. Like it or not, it is what it is, and I don’t really see the point in trying to force it to change through these sorts of policy propositions.
