If you’ve never heard of the Max original show “Somebody Somewhere,” don’t worry. Not a lot of people have heard of the show and its beauty.
The show takes place in the Midwest in a small town called Manhattan, Kansas. It follows Sam, her family, her unique group of friends and the different aspects of their lives and friendship.
It’s hard to describe the plot specifically because it can be seen as a show about nothing, but also everything. The characters go through different challenges, like the loss of a loved one, relationships and family issues.
You might think that those qualities in a show can make it boring, but in reality, it leaves you thinking about your own life. Even if you don’t share the same struggles of the characters, you’ll resonate with something and realize it’s okay not to be perfect.
At the beginning of the show, Sam has a strained relationship with her sister, Tricia. This is made even worse when the two of them are mourning the death of their sister, Holly. They clearly have some feelings they haven’t been able to mend.
After having a deep conversation while stuck in a barn with Tricia during a tornado, their relationship takes a turn for the better. Tricia undergoes a major character change, becoming free, independent and more caring of Sam and her friends.
Joel is someone who yearns for having the picture-perfect family life with a husband and kids, but he’s also afraid that this dream of his will never come true as he gets older. Instead of settling, he breaks up with his boyfriend at the beginning of the series and meets Brad, who becomes his husband.
Even though their relationship seems perfect and too good to be true, they do remain together. Not every domestic relationship is perfect, and while Joel is afraid of the problems that do arise, he realizes that he can confront them head-on while still loving Brad.
The show does a great job of being inclusive, especially of characters with different personalities and identities. In doing so, it acts as a glimpse into a life we may or may not have lived beforehand.
As people have said time and time again over the last couple of years, the best shows always get canceled. “Somebody Somewhere” falls into that category, which is bittersweet.
The show will make you angry, laugh, cry, and it can serve as inspiration. It will teach you that this is the beauty of life, even if it’s not always going to be pretty. As long as you are surrounded by friends and family, things will be alright after all.
When everything feels stressful and overwhelming, take a second to turn on “Somebody Somewhere” and enjoy. The show had a short lifespan but made an impact great enough to be felt even at the end of the show’s life.
If you’re looking to watch the show, it’s available in its entirety on Max. Once you watch an episode, you’ll see there’s no other show like it.
