After a week that featured two canceled games due to poor weather, the Fordham women’s tennis team was forced to move its spring home opener match indoors. The team traveled to Sound Shore Tennis in Port Chester, N.Y. to host Temple on indoor courts on March 24. In the end, though, the matching being rescheduled and a few days off did not seem to bother the Rams and they won the match against Temple.
The Temple match was a close one for the Rams, as they won it 4-3. They were first helped out by a strong doubles showing. The first doubles team of sophomore Sarah Ali and senior Amy Simidian won their match 8-3 to start the match off. The second doubles team of sophomores Bella Genkina and
Anika Novacek then lost, but the third doubles team of sophomore Julie Leong and junior Angelika Dabu won by the score of 8-3 to make sure the Rams got the doubles point.
In singles, the Rams won three of the six matches. In her first singles match, Simidian came back from losing her first set to win the next two and the match. In the fifth singles match, Leong also lost her first set before winning the next two and her match. In sixth singles, sophoNovacek won her first and third sets to take the match.
The Rams are now off to a 5-5 start to their spring season, while Temple fell to 5-11. The Rams have played considerably fewer games so far this spring than their Atlantic 10 competitors thanks to eight canceled or postponed games.
The Rams are back in action on April 3 at home against Marist. Marist plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and is off to a 2-5 start this season. After the Marist game, the Rams stay at home to take on Xavier in an Atlantic 10 match on April 5. Xavier has started 12-5 this season. The Rams then conclude the week at home on April 7 against another Atlantic 10 team, Rhode Island. Rhode Island is only 1-7 on the year.
