The Board of Trustees voted to rescind Charlie Rose’s honorary doctorate degree in light of sexual misconduct allegations, according to a university statement sent out early Thursday morning.
WFUV, the university’s non-commercial, member-supported public radio station, has also rescinded Rose’s Osgood Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. He received the award at WFUV’s On the Record event in 2015.
Rose, who co-anchored CBS This Morning from 2012 to 2015 and hosted a long time talk show on PBS, received his honorary degree in 2008.
Rose was fired by CBS in November and PBS discontinued distribution of his programs after The Washington Post reported eight women had come forward with allegations Rose made “crude sexual advances.”
“Though Mr. Rose is among the premier broadcast journalists in the United States, the revelation in November that eight women have credibly accused him of unwanted sexual advances and harassment from the 1990s to 2011 render him an inappropriate recipient of Fordham honors,” said the university’s email.
Chuck Singleton, general manager of WFUV, said the station is dedicated to supporting future generations of reporters. In order to do so, honorees must model professional workplace behavior.
“WFUV will always have a culture that welcomes talented young journalists, producers, and other media professionals and supports their advancement, without fear of encountering such obstacles,” said Singleton in a statement.
Singleton said WFUV is “sorry to see a distinguished career tainted by the allegations of sexual misconduct.”
The university rescinded Bill Cosby’s honorary degree in 2015 after a wave of sexual assault allegations.
According to Deadline, the City University of New York’s graduate school of journalism announced yesterday it had rescinded a lifetime achievement award it gave Rose in 2012.
The Fordham Ram reached out to Charlie Rose for a comment. Should he provide one, the article will be updated.
