Andrew Hozier-Byrne, better known as Hozier, has been known for his lyrical brilliance in his songs since “Take Me to Church” first blew up in 2013, accelerating his career. More than ten years later, he has not lost that artistic touch.
Hozier’s latest song, “Too Sweet,” had fans obsessed with just the chorus teaser — and for good reason. The title alone drew attention to the song, with numerous theories floating around regarding the shift to “You’re too sweet for me” after the lyric from “Take Me to Church,” “There’s nothing sweeter than my baby.” Many speculated about the song, with commenters asking for people to check on Brittany Broski (under the impression the song was about her) and saying how they would become insufferable upon the full version’s release.
In the days leading up to the release, Hozier posted a TikTok that revealed one of the verses of the song. With the line, “You treat your mouth as if it’s Heaven’s gate, the rest of you like you’re the TSA,” Hozier had won over the language-lover in me, using more beautiful and meaningful figurative language than I could dream of writing with such flow. He also reminded his listeners that he is, in fact, living in the same time as them, with many joking that they didn’t think the singer knew about such modern things as TSA.
“Too Sweet” was one of four songs released by the artist on his EP “Unheard” on March 22. Within the month following its release, “Too Sweet” has already climbed the rankings to one of Hozier’s top songs on Apple Music. “Wildflower and Barley,” also on the EP, is his fifth top song. The Irishman is certainly not letting his listeners down with the recent releases, as they have perfectly appealed to his demographic.
Perhaps the most compelling part of “Too Sweet” is how the lyrics outlining how the couple is incompatible are accompanied by the ringing of wedding bells in the background. This demonstrates that although Hozier is singing that the girl is too sweet for him, he ultimately still loves her and wants to end up with her.
The song tells a beautiful story of how opposites attract. The night owl and the early bird, the sweet and the bitter, the guarded and the open. Hozier has been and continues to be one of the best storytellers and emotion conveyors of our current generation of music. Though “Too Sweet” is his current hit, so have been “Almost (Sweet Music),” “Work Song” and “Take Me to Church,” and so will be another release in months or years to come.
