The first game of the season for Fordham Football resulted in a tough loss against the Boston College (BC) Eagles with a disheartening score of 66-10.
Despite the loss, quarterback Gunnar Smith, a transfer from Highland Community College, made himself known during his Fordham Football debut. Despite facing tough competition for the starting role — especially against returning quarterback Jack Capaldi, who started nine games last season — Smith managed to make a strong impression. Smith completed 19 passes and ran for a one-yard touchdown, ultimately putting him on the map for games to come.
In a game with a seldom few bright spots , graduate student linebacker James Conway was able to lead the team defensively with 17 tackles. Conway leads the Patriot League in career tackles with 436. His leadership will continue to serve as a critical anchor for the Rams this year.
As for Boston College, quarterback Dylan Lonergan was a standout, throwing four touchdowns during his BC debut. In addition, linebacker Daveon Crouch kicked off his senior season after an award-winning year in 2024. In the third quarter, Crouch intercepted a pass and returned it for 28 yards.
Ending last season with a 7-6 record after defeating the University of Pittsburgh, BC is entering the new season with confidence.
This confidence was evident specifically in the second half of the game, where the Eagles adjusted quickly, shutting down Fordham University’s offensive rhythm and piling on 35 points.
Tough mistakes like missed tackles, turnovers and defensive breakdowns hurt the Rams, as they struggled to gain any momentum. The game ultimately underscored Fordham’s need for consistency as they strive to rebound and grow throughout the season.
This game was big for new players all the way around.
Another bright spot for Fordham came from the special teams unit. Sophomore kicker Ben Kean, who struggled with consistency last year, nailed a 45-yard field goal in the second quarter. It was a small victory in a difficult game, but an encouraging sign of growth and potential in the kicking unit moving forward.
Following a 2-10 record in 2024, Fordham has the opportunity to redeem themselves this season. This is just the beginning.
