The Fordham Rams men’s tennis team hit the road last weekend to New Haven, Conn. to compete at the ITA Regionals at Yale University. In just their second action of the season after taking part in the Fairfield Invitational last month, the Rams secured key victories across both the singles and doubles slates.
At the Fairfield Invitational, Fordham were only able to compete in a handful of matches before the competition was canceled due to poor weather.
The fireworks started early in New Haven as sophomore John Mascone came from behind against the College of the Holy Cross’s Teddy Callery 3-6, 7-6, 5-1. Mascone’s win is encouraging as he looks to build off a strong 2022-23 season in which he finished 5-4 in singles action and 3-1 in the fourth singles spot.
Coming up just short in his singles match was sophomore Stefan Stojanovic. He battled closely with Zino Varouhas-Poole of Siena College, but ultimately came up short 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The Rams secured another victory on the doubles courts courtesy of senior Nicholas Kanazirev and sophomore Dhillon Virdee-Oakley, 8-5.
After finishing 6-10 in 2021 and 8-12 in 2022, the Fordham Men’s Tennis squad will look to continue to improve as they head into a new season. While official spring season play won’t begin until late January, victories and added experience in the fall will help build momentum for the long season ahead.
The Rams will be back in action from Oct. 21-22 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take part in the Marist College Invitational. After that, Fordham will have one final competition in the fall when they host the Fordham Four Invite on Oct. 21-22.
