Fordham Water Polo Stays Perfect in MAWPC
Fordham Water Polo bested Wagner to remain undefeated in the MAWPC while also improving their overall record to an impressive 18-4 as a key stretch of conference games to end the season begins.
The 16th ranked Fordham water polo team edged Wagner College 12–8 at home to stay a perfect 6–0 in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play with an overall record of 18–4. In a season defined by a high-octane offense, this low scoring match proved to be a battle won by stellar goalkeeping and defense by the Rams.
Fordham surrendered a man advantage Wagner goal to open the match, but three straight goals from graduate student Hans Zdolsek, freshman Lucas Nieto Jasny and senior Dimitris Koukias gave the Rams a 3–1 lead with under 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Wagner punched in another score to end the opening period. The second quarter yielded the same result of 3–2 with the Rams’ lead growing to 6–4 going into halftime thanks to sophomore Christos Loupakis, freshman George Papanikolaou and Nieto Jasny goals.
Fordham established its largest lead of the match at that point early in the third quarter, with two quick goals pushing the score to 8–4. The Rams maintained this lead throughout the period, heading into the fourth up 10–6.
While scoring remained dormant to begin the final period, freshman George Papanikolaou’s team-high third goal of the match boosted Fordham’s lead to five, resulting in a 12–8 final score. Nieto Jasny led the way for the Rams on offense with four scores, but outstanding play from senior goalkeeper Bailey O’Mara propelled Fordham to victory through a season-high 15 save performance.
Additionally, Christos Loupakis and Dimitris Koukias each added two goals and an assist.
