The Fordham women’s soccer team had a much-needed weeklong break from games after starting off 4-6-3 overall and 2-1-2 in Atlantic 10 play.
They continued their stretch of conference play to conclude the season, traveling to play the University of Rhode Island on Sunday. The first half was a defensive battle between the two schools, with limited scoring opportunities. Fordham managed five shots, two of which were on goal, while Rhode Island took six shots, with only one being on goal. However, Fordham did not take their first shot until over 20 minutes into the half and took two within the final minute of the half.
The second half was the opposite of a defensive battle between the two sides, with offenses making their mark on the game. The game’s first score came off a Fordham corner kick in the 50th minute. Freshman Lena Johnsen booted the ball into the box, finding graduate student Emily Crocco, who headed it into the bottom left corner.
After several attempts on goal for the equalizer, Rhode Island broke free for the tying score in the 67th minute courtesy of Sam Haggerty. Just 83 seconds later, a foul inside Fordham’s box awarded Rhode Island a penalty. Jordyn Allen converted the attempt to put Rhode Island up 2-1.
It looked as if the penalty kick would be the difference in the game and Fordham would be sent back home with their second conference loss. However, with seconds left in the match, junior Fernanda Serna corralled a loose ball, evaded a defender and put it into the back of the net for the game-tying goal with seven seconds to go. The goal was Serna’s first of her career.
With their fourth tie of the season, the team goes to 4-6-4 overall and 2-1-3 in conference play. Fordham returns to play this Saturday with another A-10 clash against La Salle University in Philadelphia.
