Men’s Tennis Competes at ITA Regionals
After a quick stop in the Bronx, the Fordham men’s tennis team was back on the road as it traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the ITA Northeast Regionals at the University of Penn.
This four-day event ranging from Thursday, Oct. 17, through Sunday, Oct. 20, featured some of the top talent in the region. Fordham was no exception as it joined the festivities looking to make an impact. With tough competition, the men couldn’t translate wins onto the scorecard.
Max Green, who was second-team all-Conference last year, couldn’t find his footing over the weekend dropping the main draw 3–6, 3–6 to St. John’s Udayan Bhaker. Green, who was named last year’s team MVP, is looking to find a grove before January when they start its main schedule.
Fordham also had some hard-fought matches; junior Lutwin de Macar from Belgium fell to Lehigh’s Matt Kleiman in a hard-fought battle, losing 5–7, 6–4, 1–10. Fellow teammate and senior Fabian Mauritzson, who has played well in the opening tournaments, was bounced by Drexel’s Hugo Brungs, 7–5, 4–6, 4–10.
The solo play from Fordham couldn’t get the job done in Philadelphia but in doubles play, Fordham was able to get a split decision. The partnership of Lutwin de Macar and Fabian Mauitzon was victorious in their opener with an 8–3 win over Rutgers’ Kat Muzik and Jaci Cochrane. They eventually ended up losing to the tandem of Devon Jack and Courtney Kowalsky from Brown, 8–5.
The Rams will next be in action in the Bronx as they host the Fordham Fall Quad. The event will be Oct. 26–27 as Fordham looks to finish 2019 strong as it will be its last event until Jan. 18 when it travels to Bucknell.
