This past weekend, Fordham Men’s Tennis made its way down to New Jersey to take part in the ITA Northeast Championships, hosted by Princeton.
The squad found most of its success in the singles tournament. Junior Fabian Hansch Mauritzson qualified for the round of 32 by defeating Alec Dardis of Colgate 6-4, 6-2 but was then defeated by Jason Hildenbrandt of Penn in the next round 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Lutwin de Macar and junior Finn Kemper each played one match in the qualifying rounds, with de Macar losing 6-1, 6-3 to Binghamton’s Dylan Friedman and Kemper falling to Alejandro Quiros of Army West Point 6-1, 7-6 (7). The one Ram that made his way to the main singles round was sophomore Max Green, who lost in his first match of the main round to Princeton’s Bill Duo 6-3, 6-0.
“The tournament itself was loaded with all the best players in the Northeast region which made the competition extremely tough,” Green said, saying he was happy with how the four players performed overall. “Personally, I played one of the top ranked freshman in the country from Princeton. The level of the match was super high and I was pleased with my performance.”
In doubles action, Mauritzson and de Macar lost 8-3 to Artur Jakubowski and Matt Kuhar of Bryant, while Kemper and Green lost their bout with Harvard’s Christopher Morrow and Robert Wrzesinski 8-2.
Green also said that the team’s performance at this tournament is a good sign of what is to come. “The fall season is all about getting match play and getting stronger and fitter,” he explained. “We feel that we have all been training at a high level and feel confident for the upcoming tournament and for the Spring season ahead.”
After a week off, the Rams’ next test is back at home on the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts on Oct. 27-28 in the Fordham Quad. They will welcome in Hofstra, Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn.
