The Fordham Men’s Tennis team had a long, but extremely successful weekend. The Rams played one away match on Friday and one home match on Saturday. They faced Sacred Heart University first on Friday, winning the tournament with a tight score of 4-3. They then faced the University of Connecticut on Saturday, breezing through the tournament with a score of 6-1.

The team’s game against Sacred Heart started with the doubles matches. In the first doubles position, freshman Lutwin de Macar and sophomore Fabian Mauritzson won their set 7-5. Following this win, classmates Finn Kemper and Jeremy Chung won their second doubles match with a score of 6-2. This gave Fordham the doubles point, and caused the third doubles match to be left unfinished with a close score of 5-6.

The singles matches were divided evenly between Fordham and Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart took the first singles, fifth singles and sixth singles matches. Fordham fought hard to win the second singles, third singles and fourth singles matches. De Macar won the second singles match with a score of 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Mauritzson took the third singles match, sweeping his opponent 6-1, 6-1. Kemper also took the fourth singles match, winning 6-2, 6-3. Thus, every point was well-deserved and earned through hard work and determination, and this allowed Fordham to take the game from Sacred Heart with the tight score of 4-3.

The game against UConn saw more successes in Fordham, but also closer scores, in the individual matches. De Macar and Mauritzson took the first doubles match with a score of 7-5, while Kemper and Chung won the second doubles match with a score of 7-6. UConn won the third doubles match with a score of 7-5, but the doubles point went to Fordham, who won two out of three doubles matches.

All but one of the singles matches went to Fordham. De Macar won the first singles match with a score of 6-4, 7-6. Freshman Max Green played a three set match for the second singles position, ultimately winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. In third singles, Mauritzson defeated his opponent in two close sets, ending with a score of 6-4, 7-6. Kemper won the fourth singles match in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The fifth singles match went to UConn, but freshman Alex Makatsaria came back from losing the first set to win the sixth singles match for Fordham. It was a long match, but Makatsaria triumphed in three sets, with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Rams will be facing St. John’s on March 4 at their home courts in Harrison.
