If it seems like Floyd Mayweather has done it all in the sport of boxing, it’s because he has; disappointing the thousands of critics and haters along the way to a perfect 50-0 record. A champion in five different weight classes, Mayweather’s amassment of accolades is well documented, as is the money accumulated from said boxing career. The question with Floyd is never about what has been, but what’s next for the 41-year-old?

Rumors are swirling about Mayweather flirting with the idea of taking his talents from the boxing ring and into the MMA octagon. A potential rematch with Conor McGregor on McGregor’s home turf is a possibility. However, MMA isn’t the only sport on Mayweather’s radar. This past weekend, in an interview with the Sunday Daily Star of England, Mayweather expressed interest in the sport of soccer.

Let’s not get it twisted: Mayweather will NOT be lacing up cleats and getting on the pitch. Instead, Mayweather divulged the possibility of owning his own soccer team, and, specifically, a takeover bid for Newcastle United in the Barclays Premier League. His intrigue with the club stems from a tour of speaking engagements in the UK back in 2017. Speaking of Newcastle, Mayweather said, “I love Newcastle. Those guys like to party as hard as any city I have been to anywhere in the world.”

Mayweather had also taken the time out to meet with the squad of Newcastle United. Mayweather added, “I met some of the players last year, and they are good guys. I am always open to new business opportunities, and I love all sports, but I invest with my head not my heart.”

The idea of being an owner of a soccer club isn’t necessarily a dream of his. He admits that “soccer might not be my game, but I’ve got connections everywhere.”

His possible investment in ownership of a club is predicated on one thing: money. As Mayweather put it, “Investing with your heart is the quickest way to lose money, but if somebody put together a business plan and my people looked over it and went ‘Floyd, that can make money,’ then I would invest.”

Mayweather has always been known as a captious man. Whether it be finding the faults of his opponents in the boxing ring or in a business venture, Mayweather calculates every risk to make sure it lies in his favor. In this case, what would the domino effect be with Floyd Mayweather as a soccer club owner?

Money Maywesather was keen on the first footballer he’d recruit to Newcastle United should he become owner. “Cristiano Ronaldo has been a long-time supporter and buddy of mine, so I might even be able to get him to finish his career off at Newcastle,” Mayweather said.
Whether you hate him or love him, Mayweather is right about one thing in his interview: he does have connections. Soccer stars such as Ronaldo and Neymar are both huge fans of his. Could he possibly persuade them into joining a team led by him?

One thing is for sure: if Floyd is coming into the life of sports ownership undefeated, you can be sure he’s going to want to stay undefeated.
