Swimming and Diving Trounce Fairfield Over Weekend
By Dominic Capone
The Fordham swimming and diving team cruised by the Fairfield Stags as the men and women add to the win column. The men got their first win of the season with a 167-61 trouncing of the Stags as they improve to 1-2. The women continued their dominance with a 153-80 win moving to 3-0 on the season.
The men swept all 13 events on Friday. Junior Christian Sleutjes won both the 200 and 500 freestyles in times of 1:45.60 and 4:51.42 respectively. Junior Casey Sawyer clocked in at 52.93 to take first place in the 100 butterfly.
Veteran senior Travis Monahan got in the win column as he notched first place in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 21.65 seconds. Freshman Diego Perez and senior Christopher Craig each picked up a win on the diving board. Perez scored 213.45 on the one-meter board as Craig scored 251.26 on the three-meter board.
“The guys are feeling motivated after achieving the first win for the season,” Monahan said after the match. “We obviously got off to a rough start and it’s great to see some improvements. Due to losing some key swimmers last year, there appears to be a bit of a transition period and I think the guys are doing a great job accommodating for this.”
There is no doubt that the men do have talent on their team—they just have to find more continuity week in and week out.
On the opposite side, the women have started 3-0 for the third time in the last four years. They have had an incredible run and they do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. They won 12 of the 13 events against Fairfield.
Third year diver, Molly Dunn, finished first in two diving events. She scored 231.23 on the one-meter board and 244.43 on the three-meter board to lead the women.
In the long 1000 freestyle, Kate Magill secured a first-place spot as she won it in 10:57.73. Other winners in the individual freestyle included: Kysha Marie Altura in the 50 (24.88), Caitlyn McNary in the 100 (52.93) and Tara Brunner in the 200 (1:54.14).
Altura also added a win in the 200-medley relay, with a time of 1:48.48, with Gabrielle Celia, Kiara Norris and Samantha McDonald.
“Coming off such a great meet leading into this week’s mid-season invitational at Bucknell, the team is feeling confident and we can expect some fast times over the weekend,” Monahan added.
Both the men and the women look to continue their winning ways as the team heads to Lewisburg, Penn. for the annual Bucknell Invitational starting on Friday, Nov. 16 and going all the way through the weekend.
