Fordham University Women’s Soccer got their first win against the Duquesne University Dukes since 2013 with a 3-1 victory at Moglia Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 3. The Rams got on the board in the eighth minute when sophomore midfielder Lena Johnsen delivered a corner kick into the box, finding senior Ryann Lucas for a headed goal, her first of the season. Lucas was given the opportunity to double her goal tally just seven minutes later after senior Fernanda Serna went down the box for a Fordham Penalty. Lucas buried the penalty kick to increase the Fordham lead to 2-0. The Rams ended the half strong with a lovely finish from freshman Julia Acosta for her sixth goal of the season, thanks to a through ball from sophomore defender Ava Giudice. The Dukes got on the board in the 63rd minute the same way that Fordham started the matchup, with junior Maya Matesa scoring a header from a corner kick sent into the box by fellow junior Margey Brown. The 3-1 scoreline would hold as the Rams advanced 3-1 in conference play ahead of their trip to Davidson College.
The Ram’s traveled to North Carolina this weekend for a mid-Sunday Atlantic 10 matchup against the Davidson College Wildcats. Fordham went down a goal midway through the first half when junior forward Dakota Lyons won the ball from the Ram defense before slotting the ball past freshman goalkeeper Addison Green. The hosting Wildcats did not take their foot off the gas, hammering shots on goal deep into the second half of play, but Green remained steadfast in goal, registering eight saves on the afternoon. The Rams put the game back on level terms, Liina Tervo pounced on a disruptive free-kick by Lena Johnsen, scoring from 10 yards out for her ninth goal of the year. This effort brought her total points on the season to 25, good enough for a freshman program record with a month still left to play in the season. Fordham got their chance to take the lead in the 73rd minute, when sophomore Sari Frankl was brought down in the box, awarding the visitors a penalty kick. Tervo stepped up to the spot for the Rams, but was denied by Davidson goalkeeper Emily Smith. Determined not to let Smith have all the fun, Green made one last dive in the 88th minute to keep the score at 1-1. With this result, Fordham moves to 8-3-3 on the season, with their conference record standing at 3-1-2. The Rams will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 13, when they host the University of Rhode Island at Moglia Stadium for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
