The Fordham University women’s tennis team had a week between matches as their competition with the Boston College Eagles on Feb. 9 was canceled. They began a short road trip down south against the Clemson University Tigers, where they were shut out 4-0 on Feb. 14 by a tough 8-1 Clemson squad. The Rams bounced back the following day against the Davidson College Wildcats in North Carolina, claiming the victory with a final score of 4-3.
Davidson claimed the doubles point by bouncing back after dropping the first doubles match. Senior Lorraine Bergmann and sophomore Lily Chitambar won first doubles with a score of 6-2 in the Rams’ lone doubles win on the day. Bergmann, the most successful Ram of the day, also won her match in fourth singles against Davidson’s Savanna Kollock, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(6). Junior Nevena Kolarevic and freshmen Paola Ueno Dalmonico and Catalina Padilla Udaeta also claimed wins in singles to cement the Fordham win, all in straight sets with final scores of 6-3, 6-3 for the Rams.
The Atlantic 10 conference league office awarded sophomore Julianne Nguyen A-10 Women’s Tennis Performer of the Week honors for her performance against the Illinois State University Redbirds on Feb. 7. In that competition, she helped the Rams shut out the Redbirds 4-0 by winning her matches in first singles and first doubles.
The women now sit at 4-2 and will head to Virginia to play the George Mason University Patriots on March 1 at 6:45 p.m. The men’s team, currently 0-4, returns to action on Feb. 21 when they head to Philadelphia to face the University of Pennsylvania Quakers at 5 p.m.
