Fordham Road is home to many different dining outlets. There is a Popeye’s further up the road, the infamous Ram’s Deli and a variety of other typical fast food joints. One of my personal favorite late night rituals is to go to Ram’s Deli, grab a chicken parm sandwich on a hiro with an order of mozzarella sticks and hangout with my friends. But the newly established confectionery store might be a new stop in my habitual quest.
University Delights — which opened just a few weeks ago — is a sugary smorgasbord of milkshakes, ice cream and açaÍ bowls. It is located right next to Ram’s Deli and across the street from Super Best Deli — both hot-spots on most late nights. University Delights has everything your sweetest dreams could imagine: cereal flavored milkshakes, candy ice cream sundaes, mini pancakes; truly anything sweet that you can dream up, University Delights has it.
When it opened, I knew I had to try it as soon as I could. A few of my friends were in the mood one night for a sweet treat, and when I brought up the possibility of trying this new confectionery shop, they seemed thrilled. I mean, what’s not to love about a place that has endless options?
After my visit to University Delights, I thought I’d share a few takeaways.
One: the quality of the desserts. Each of my friends ordered different items off the menu, and each one exceeded our expectations. From my Reese’s peanut butter cup sundae to my friend’s strawberry cheesecake milkshake and strawberry pancakes, everyone left full and satisfied with their purchase. Across the board, the quality was consistent, and our tastebuds were pleased.
Two: the price is hard to justify, despite the quality. Most items on the menu range from $10-$15, and even though the portions are a decent size, it still feels a bit too pricey for the amount of food.
Three: the service. I would estimate it took around 10-15 minutes for the first of our three items to come out. Luckily, the interior is very nicely decorated with a nice, clean, modern aesthetic that is welcoming and fun to look at. Even though it took them a while, the workers were very nice and took the time to perfect our treats, so the long wait time could be seen as either a pro or con depending on what you value service-wise.
Overall, I’d say that my experience at University Delights was a really good one. I had a sundae that was delicious and left me wanting more — even if it was a little pricey and took a while to make. In the near future, I plan on going here again, though not too frequently as it does put a decent-sized dent in my wallet. Regardless, when I’m on the way to Ram’s Deli for my regular sandwich and mozzarella sticks, I will be tempted to stop by.
